On July 28, 2023, anti-dumping duty (AD) petitions were filed on mattresses from Bosnian & Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Burma, India, Italy, Kosovo, Mexico, Philippines, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, and Taiwan, and a countervailing duty (CVD) petition was filed on mattresses from Indonesia.
This is the third investigation about mattress imported into US market from other countries, early in April, 2020, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced the initiation of new anti dumping (AD) and countervailing duty (CVD) investigations to determine whether mattresses from Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Serbia, Thailand, Turkey, and Vietnam are being sold in the United States at less than fair value, and to determine if producers in China are receiving unfair subsidies.
So from the first anti dumping investigation on mattresses from China in the year 2019, We can see that anti-dumping actions cause a reduction in the volume and value of imports from China as well as an increase in the price of those goods in the US market. but these effects are short-lived because the anti-dumping actions against China prompt a substitution effect as they increase US imports from other countries. So this is why the second and third AD petitions happened frequently.
